According to the World Food Programme (WFP), Somalia has seen 15 years of drought since 1983, that is a year of drought in every two to three years. From 2010 to 2012, Somalia was gripped by a crippling famine that killed nearly 260,000 people.
Agricultural productivity is the first step or engine of economic growth leading to greater income for a country. Sufficient and suitable food supply is necessary for eliminating food poverty and hunger.
Food aid is never enough; we need to help people grow their food supplies. This is what makes the difference in the long term. If you send food supplies this year, there may be drought next year, then what?
Increased productivity of agriculture raises farm incomes, increases food supply, reduces food prices, and provides greater employment opportunities in both rural and urban areas.
OUR AIMS:
GROUND WATER IRRIGATION AND RAINWATER HARVESTING
To tackle hunger and poverty, we believe that farming small plots of irrigated land by families is the starting step to increase food security in the country. With instruction and materials like equipment and seed, a small irrigated farm can supply nutrition for a family. In step two, the family adds a diverse selection of crops to their fields to increase productivity. In step three, the family adds animals such cows, sheep, goats or chicken. This increases the family income and energises the local economy.
We need help in accessing ground water for irrigation such as drilling equipment and training for local personnel. We also need drip irrigation equipment and training for local personnel of how to set up drip irrigation systems.
OUR MOTTO: HELP PEOPLE TO HELP THEMSELVES
Please give whatever you can afford. A gift, no matter how small, will help us reach the most vulnerable.
